Gamasutra Talks to EA’s CCO 0

Bing Gordon is the chief creative officer and an executive VP at Electronic Arts which enables him to follow the work around Spore closely. Gamasutra sat down with him and asked him a bunch of questions, a few of them had Spore content.

Spore has more innovations than The Sims did. So, Spore is important because it might create a new division for EA, but for sure what it’s doing is getting our feet wet in trying to do a Web 2.0 game.

In other news EBgames.com has once more changed their ETA for Spore from 2/18/2008 to 3/3/2008.

Will at 2007 New Yorker Conference 1

Will Wright recently attended the 2007 New Yorker Conference which had the theme “2012: Stories from the Near Future”; the segment was recorded on tape! After a brief presentation of Will by John Seabrook the man himself start presenting Spore for the crowd. What you first notice is that graphics seems more polished. We’ll also get to see the very first moments when a comet crashes into a planet to spur life. Furthermore the tide pool, creature and space phases are shown and Will also talks about the concepts of terraforming planets and affecting their climates.

Will is at the end of the conference segment interview by John Seabrook on different topics, but mainly the theme of the happening. One question that was particularly interesting was the decision behind the cartoonish look of Spore and why it wasn’t made more realistic. It provided a very interesting answer!

Note that when the release date is discussed you should bare in mind that this was conducted before the latest info on that topic.

The Release Date 2

More sources are commenting on the recent statement by an EA official on Spore’s delayed release. IGN has a short blurb on their site while GameSpot has a somewhat more lengthy report with some interesting quotes from the previously mentioned conference call.

“Spore is a title we have enormous confidence in,” Riccitiello told analysts. “I’ve had the chance to review the title three times in my short return to the EA, and it looks fantastic. I will also tell you that its release will be right up [to] the bubble in Q4 [of fiscal ‘08], if not sometime in early fiscal ‘09, so we don’t feel comfortable in forecasting it.”

“We’re focusing on quality to make sure we build a franchise that feels more like The Sims, a franchise that we hope…to see around for some time in the future.”

Sounds fair enough. Though concerns must be raised whether the quality aspect is worrying or not. And will Spore go the exact same way in terms of endless expansion packs as The Sims has? Time will tell.

Ebgames.com Confirms New Release 0

In reaction to yesterday’s press regarding a new release date projection for Spore, ebgames.com has updated their release date estimate from October 31, 2007 to the new projection of March 1st, 2008. Bad news for all the hungry Spore fans.

Spore.com Minor Updates 2

After almost a year with no updates to the official Spore.com site, it seems the spore team is making some, albeit small, effort to keep fans drooling. The site now has service in 12 languages and features some minor animation added to the header serving a purely aesthetic purpose.

Along with these minor updates, a small easter egg has been discovered! Apparently Will is hard at work changing light bulbs in the development room. Enjoy.

Spore Delayed Until 2008 5

Today during a conference call with analysts to discuss EA’s earnings, EA posted a net loss of $25 million and CEO John Riccitiello revealed that Spore will likely not be making into the 2008 fiscal year ending March 31, 2008. This comes as bad news for Spore fans who had been optimistically hoping for a late October release. With this new development, it could be almost a year before we see Spore on the shelves.
