GameSpy has posted a sum up of Will Wright’s keynote speach from this year’s Game Developers Conference. Though admittedly, as the author says, it can be somewhat of a challenge to extract the most important parts, it’s nevertheless very interesting to listen to Wright when he talks about everything from Drake’s Equation to the choices the Spore team had to make between realism and fantasy.
Interestingly, a split formed within the core team of developers working on Spore. Some wanted the game to be realistic and cool, others wanted it to be fanciful and exaggerated. Wright explained that they ended up breaking down into the “Science Team” and the “Cute Team.”
I really recommend this four page article, it’s an interesting read to get an insight how the design process of Spore is coming along and what the overall aim of the game is for the developers.
Various articles and media files have begun to drop in from the Game Developers Conference where a couple of Maxis representatives attended, including Will Wright. I’ll try to sum it up with the most important stuff.
IGN writes about how the Spore designers have worked hard to reduce file sizes when sharing over the Internet. GameSpy has an article about the processes behind a big title like Spore and how it works to build it up from scratch. And finally GameSpot has various excerpts from Will Wright’s speach at the GDC.
At Google Video you can see a short, but insanely cool, video showing the creature editor in action.
Keep checking back for more info as we get it.
Maxis’ Will Wright talked Spore at Entertainment Gathering which today’s edition of Washinton Post picked up. In it you can read about the overall game mechanics and how gaming is evolving to more user interaction. Nothing new or exciting but still an interesting read. And the buzz around Spore continous to be very high.
News about Spore have begin to show up in the most unlikely places. The latest article comes from Kansas, US based newspaper Wichita Eagle that reports about the strong buzz around the game. Will Wright, lead designer, expects the game to be so large that, I quote:
I figure, assuming we sell 1 million copies and you spend one hour in every world before going to the next one, it would take something like 20 years (to explore it all) without stopping or sleeping.
In similar news a missed preview has come to ur attention at CVG. Check it out, though not much new is revealed.
