In lack of some real exciting news like the announcement of a Spore demo or the 2011th sighting of Elvis, after his death, you might be interested in some Saturday snacks. Bagunk has an interview with Jenova Chen, one of the Spore designers and creator of probably the coolest flash game ever, called flOw. A game very similar to the first stage in Spore. And may we guess one of the reasons he was hired on the team? Anyway, the interview revolves entirely around flash and flOw - and it case you’ve missed it altogether, here it is.
The NY Times has posted a huge 5-page article with interviews with the Spore team, including Will Wright which is the main character talked about. Though long it’s a very well-written piece of excellence presented with lots of interesting tid-bits along with a few things surfacing related to Spore.
An entire planet in Spore — teeming with plants, weather and creatures — takes up about 80K of memory. By comparison, a typical song on your iPod is about 50 times larger. You could download an entire galaxy of Spore planets before you could download all the tracks on “Dark Side of the Moon.”
If your eyes still aren’t bleeding check out Synthesis talking about why Wright is insane. And a genius.
In a recent interview with Will Wright over at GameSpot the gaming guru confirms recent rumours that Spore’s release date has been pushed back even further. The new deal is that we won’t see the game on the shelves until the second half of 2007.
WW: We’re saying the second half of next year [2007] for now.
Though that may come as a discomfort to some of us you might cheer up to read some of the other stuff in the interview, such as the fact that the development is progressing smoothly and that there’s a big chance for console versions of the game.
When confronted with a question about the release date in a breakfast meeting with GameSpy Will Wright had the following to add:
WW: We’re saying that Spore is coming out in 2007. The message that we are getting from [Electronic Arts] corporate is “Don’t screw it up,” which is great. What they mean is, “Lets get it right.” This will be the game’s last E3.
GameSpy: So it will come out in the first quarter of 2007?
WW: Probably just after that, though we are not being precise. What we are saying is just outside the fiscal year, which is March.
In the talk WW continues to say that the game will be going out to all platforms, even mobiles, each creature will be about three or four megabytes and the Spore team currently consists of around 70 people, which is small compared to similar projects. A great talk, check it out!
